Santa Rosa Nursing School, Nursing professionals are a fundamental part in the practice of medicine and their work can become so specialized that, in practice, the profession is divided into several categories. Some nurses specialize in assisting in the practice of obstetrics during the pregnancy, childbirth, and post partum process. Santa Rosa Nursing School in the evaluation, selection, administration and monitoring of different types of anesthesia, according to the patient’s need and the surgical procedure to which he will be subjected. Currently, the law to regulate the practice of nursing of Puerto Rico (1987) divides the nurses in four scales: Nurse/or specialist, nurse/or general practitioner, nurse/or associate and nurse/or practical licentiate. However, in keeping with the advances of this profession, for several years, in the legislature we discuss a bill that seeks to regulate and temper the practice of nursing, establishing a new board of Nursing examiner and updating the Regulations concerning the issuance of licenses and certifications. The 1051 Camera project aims to establish the doctoral degree in nursing with a focus on research, explained Dr. Millie Figueroa, assistant professor of the Santa Rosa Nursing School of Nursing of the campus of Medical Sciences, of the University of Puerto Rico. The measure also proposes to add an advanced practice of nursing with several specialties and to allow the general practitioners to have the option of taking an additional year of studies in theoretical and practical courses in their area of interest.
“Because of its importance, we have organized ourselves and have a learning structure with a professional background (broader).” For example, the doctoral degree in nursing from Santa Rosa Nursing School, with a focus on research, seeks to generate new knowledge for the change in health practices. It is the only doctorate (of this type) in Puerto Rico. It is a very important option in nursing that allows to develop an independent practice, “commented Figueroa.
Categories of the law to regulate nursing practice:
(1) Nurse/specialist – holds a master’s degree with concentration in nursing. It has the ability to handle situations of complexity and possesses the knowledge in the specific area in which it is performed.
(2) Nurse/General practitioner-has a bachelor’s degree in nursing science. She works in coordination with the nurse/specialist in direct patient care.
(3) Nurse/associate-has an associate degree in nursing. Collaborates and participates in the planning and execution of direct nursing care for inpatient and outpatient patients.
(4) Licensed Nurse Practitioner-has a licensed Practical Nurse/Diploma. You can perform certain actions that require skill and judgment of your nursing preparation, but you do not have extensive knowledge required of general practitioners, specialists or associates.
What categories would be approved in the proposed law? What would happen if the measure was approved?
(1) Doctor in practice of Nursing (DNP)-you will be able to operate independently and practise private practice in Puerto Rico, offering your services by contract with agencies or people in any scenario of your practice area.
2. Advanced Practice Nurse-includes the following practice specialties: Clinical Specialist, obstetric-midwife, anesthesia, “Nurse practitioner” and specialist in other areas (such as mothers and children, adolescent care, families, Communities, critical care and mental health and psychiatry).
(3) Nurse/General practitioner-works in coordination with skilled nursing staff or advanced practice in direct nursing care. It may take an additional year of studies in your area of interest practice, such as critical care for adults or pediatric/neonatal, occupational nursing, forensic nursing, skin injury, emergency room, operating room, and nephrology.
(4) Nurse/associate-has an associate degree in Nursing and a license from the medical Examiner Board through Santa Rosa Nursing School.
(5) Nurse Practitioner-has a practical nursing diploma from an institution authorized by the Department of Education.

Nursing programs have proliferated in the country and currently there are 31.435 licensed and collegiate nurses and nurses.
The question that many are asked is where to study because there are many universities and institutes that offer the studies of certificate, associate, baccalaureate and Master’s degree in nursing.
For those interested in doing Master’s studies, Dr. Millie Figueroa, assistant professor of the School of Nursing at the campus of Medical Sciences, of the University of Puerto Rico, warned that it is important that students choose institutions that are accredited by the (CCNE), in addition to counting the accreditation of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
Currently, the institutions accredited by the CCNE are: University of Puerto Rico and Santa Rosa Nursing School, medical science enclosures, Arecibo, Humacao and Mayaguez; University of Turabo; Inter-American University in Arecibo and Inter Metro; and the UMET. The University of the Sacred Heart is in the process of reaccreditation, IndicóFigueroa.
